One of the most notable features of the MRAP (Mine Resistant Ambush Protected) variant of vehicles, is its “V” shaped hull which is designed to deflect away explosive forces originating below the vehicle, thereby protecting the vehicle and its passenger compartmentTypically these explosions are from Land Mines, but they can also be from IED’s. Several manufactures produce this platform including BAE, Oshkosh, Navistar, General Dynamics and Force Protection. With the weight approximately 14 Tons, several accidents due to driver inexperience and error has occurred resulting in death. It is critical that service members be professionally instructed in the limitations of the MRAP prior to operation.

The Oshkosh® MRAP All-Terrain Vehicle (M-ATV) is the high-mobility, high-protectionmedium tactical vehicle specifically engineered for treacherous environments. Derived from the Medium Tactical Vehicle Replacement (MTVR) platform, the M-ATV is a Mine Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicle that incorporates the TAK-4® independent suspension system to provide proven, durable, best-in-class mobility. A battle-proven armor configuration provides survivable crew protection as the M-ATV maneuvers over the most grueling terrain.

The High Mobility Multi-purpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV) is a 4-door, diesel powered, 1.25-ton capacity utility vehicle which operates in full time 4-wheel drive.  The HMMWV is 16.2 feet long, 7.5 feet wide, and is 6 feet tall.  It is equipped with an automatic transmission and in most configurations provides seating for four passengers (the vehicle can be operated with up to seven soldiers with one occupying the gunner’s station in the vehicle turret and two in the armored cargo area when equipped as a gun truck. The multiple configurations makes the HMMWV one of the most widely used military platforms in the world.

The Light Tactical All Terrain Vehicle (LTATV) is a multi-role tactical support platform. Specialized equipment such as FLIR, blackout capability, roll cages and weapon systems are typically added to make this platform a formidable system for Special Operations and Law Enforcement.
